One of my big wins at Rec Room was co-leading the art team’s transition from Photoshop to Substance Painter & Designer, alongside artists Chris Galvanin, Kristin Malone, tech artist Joseph Silverman, & ultimately the rest of the art team.
We made viewer presets to match in-game lighting, smart materials for RR-style edging & treatments previously done by hand in PS, authored smart alphas, stickers, & streamlined export. The result was faster, future proofed material authoring, improved visual consistency, & most importantly better creative flow & a much more enjoyable process.
